Iraqi Militant Kidnappers Seek Fatwa

An article in today’s NY Times (registration required) reports that a group of Iraqi militants is seeking religious guidance whether kidnapping is acceptable practice under Islamic law.

The article notes that “[M]any Muslim clerics, even those who support an armed struggle against the American military, have publicly condemned kidnapping as a tool to end the occupation.”

It quotes the militant group as saying, on a videotape aired on Al Arabiya, that “[w]e are sure that all factions of the Islamic resistance would abide by it if it is in the best interest of Islam, holy war, and Iraq.”
