Father Jake suggests that dialogue with scripturalists who oppose same-sex unions is impossible, and so it’s time to pick up a two-by-four to get their attention. Unfortunately, he’s probably right about the implacability of the scripturalists. But his metaphor is even more unfortunate.

Hmmm. I didn’t find it unfortunate. It’s an expression I’ve heard most of my life in regard to having to do something more than politely cough and wait for the other party to either notice that one was there or shut up long enough for one to get a word in edgewise.
I think that as this whole situation has gone on, the 2×4 analogy has gotten more and more apt. -
D.C., I don’t think the issue for Fr. Jake is tolerance OR a 2X4. A comment he added later to that article makes it much more clear – he’s talking about a more assertive reaction to the Dobsons of the world. More in the vein of MLK Jr or Gandhi, not physical violence.
