I’m probably late in noticing this, but Salon.com has hit on a clever advertising idea: To see selected portions of their content, you can either subscribe ($), or you can watch a short, TV-style commercial and get a free one-day pass.
The commercial I saw was for a History Channel program this Sunday night, “Ape to Man,” about the history of the theory of evolution. The commercial was quick and well-done.
The concept reminds me of two other forms of advertising: Commercials in movie theaters, and free vacations if you’ll just listen to a pitch for a time-share.
