Hell and a Loving God – Freethinking Faith Essay

Steve Jones, writer of the must-read Freethinking Faith blog, muses about whether a God who loves sinners could consign them to eternal torment.  Excerpt:

So here are the only “final punishment” options that I can imagine a person entertaining rationally:

1. God perpetuates the existence of souls so that He can forever torment them — in which case, He must hate them.

2. God inflicts only remedial punishment on the lost (whom He loves) to fit them for a higher existence.

3. God puts the lost out of existence altogether — in which case, He must hate them.

The “God-loves-the-forever-damned” option is no option.
