Someone Didn’t Get the Story Straight – But Who?

One thing is proved conclusively by the so-called Gospel of Judas:  In the early church, there were people who got the story wrong.  But which people got it wrong?

  • Was it the Gnostics, who were branded as heretics by the so-called orthodox faction?
  • Was it the orthodox themselves who got it wrong?
  • Or did both groups get it not-quite-right, with the real story being yet some other variation?

Just as important:  How do we go about figuring out what the real story was?  In this particular instance, the orthodox version of the story eventually won out.  But that’s not necessarily dispositive.
