A spousal moment

Wife:  “Honey, can you come help me a second?”

Me:  “Sure – what is it?”

Wife (arranging two paper tablecloths):  “I bought these tablecloths for the Halloween block party.  They’ve got these pumpkin decorations.  But the pumpkins are only around the edges.  I want them all over.  So let’s fold over the second tablecloth and put it on the table too, so that its pumpkins cover up this big white area in the middle of the first one.  That way we’ll have pumpkins all over the table.”

Me:  “Well, wait a second.  The tablecloth may have been designed that way for a reason.  The food will be more visible and more visually appealing on the big white area.”

Wife (stopping and looking at me, with just a trace of a smile):  “No — that’s not the kind of help I want.”

Me (laughing and throwing up hands in surrender):  “OK ….”
