The new issue of Scientific American has a piece about the recent reclassification of Pluto and other celestial bodies. One of the sidebars, “Taxonomy of Celestial Bodies” (p. 38) succinctly explains how first the stars, then planets and other objects, are thought to have formed gradually over the course of billions of years.
