Getting ready for bed last night, I mused aloud to my wife that I thought 2007 would be a good year. Then I realized I’d said exactly the same thing exactly a year ago. And I was right: while 2006 definitely had its ups and downs, on balance it was a blessing, for which we’re both grateful.
Then it occurred to me that there are two fundamental things for which we should all be grateful, because they form the basis for so much else that is ‘good’ in life:
- our ability to look backward and forward in time — to learn from the past and plan for the future — instead of being forced to endure, in helpless ignorance, whatever life happens to throw at us at any given instant; and
- our ability to relate to each other — to empathize and share knowledge and work together.
Maybe these aren’t divine gifts, but I’m betting they are. Either way, these two things certainly do give us reason for gratitude.
Happy New Year to all.
