Maretta and I saw Slumdog Millionaire with friends last night. It's a very unsettling film, very well done (and getting Oscar buzz). Every Western teenager should see it to get a forceful lesson in how privileged we are. One scene early in the movie is seriously gross; it involves a 'slumdog' child jumping down an outhouse hole into a pool of human waste (for reasons that will surprise you). But overall the film was still very human and hopeful.
While walking the dog early this morning, Maretta said, "I wonder whether they [the Indians] have religious charities that try to take care of young orphans like that; they're probably
overwhelmed by the sheer numbers." I didn't know the answer.
