Gene Robinson on John’s Gospel

From remarks by the Rt. Rev. Gene Robinson at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, California (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader):

… John’s Gospel—if you know me very well, you know that I am just not big on John’s Gospel, because the Jesus in John’s Gospel has everything figured out, it is just a snap, he’s just there going through the motions, and I know this is a pretty unfair description, but . . . in the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus virtually never points to himself, always to God.

(Hat tip to TitusOneNine; as you might expect, that blog’s traditionalist denizens are in full cry about Robinson’s remarks.)

I think its OK to have preferences, and he’s actually describing the gospel pretty accurately. The community does have it figured out, but those in darkness don’t.

Hey, anything that has the “traditionalist denizens” at TitusOneNine in an uproar must be pretty worthwhile. Heck, that’s become almost a litmus test for me 😉
    I’ll check it out, thanks!

Just out of curiosity, who was the first gay (and/or openly gay) bishop to be ordained? A link/source would help.

    Here’s one:

THE Episcopal Diocese of California has sanctioned a retired bishop for marrying his same-sex partner during a church ceremony in San Francisco, according to a published report.
The diocese has revoked the Reverend Otis Charles’ licence to officiate and removed him as an assisting bishop, according to an article published yesterday in The Living Church, a magazine for Episcopalians. The Episcopal church is the US branch of the Anglican Communion.
Charles served as Episcopal bishop of Utah for 15 years. He came out as gay following his 1993 retirement at age 67 and now lives in San Francisco.
