Primates’ Communique: My Two Cents

Apropos of the Primates’ communique, a friend of mine put it best a few months ago:  "I’m not an Anglican, I’m an Episcopalian." On the subject of homosexuality — as on other issues — we in the Episcopal Church have a moral obligation to do what we prayerfully think is best.

To be sure, we can and should consult with other churches, because all of us together are likely to be smarter than any one of us.

But ultimately, it’s each church’s responsibility to decide how it will treat its homosexual brothers and sisters.

If some churches are so opposed to what we in the American church decide, that they’re no longer able to regard themselves as in fellowship with us, then so be it.

Thank you again for your insights. I can’t stress how important your examle of Christs love is to those of us who feel pushed aside.

Section 6 of the Primate’s Communique says, “We also wish to make it quite clear that in our discussion and assessment of the moral appropriateness of specific human behaviours, we continue unreservedly to be committed to the pastoral support and care of homosexual people. The victimisation or diminishment of human beings whose affections happen to be ordered towards people of the same sex is anathema to us. We assure homosexual people that they are children of God, loved and valued by him, and deserving of the best we can give of pastoral care and friendship.”
It’s clear to me that many of the Bishops from the Global South have not been committed to the pastoral support of homosexual people, as described in section 6. In fact, in much of the Global South, homosexuals can be imprisoned, tortured, or put to death.
My modest proposal: these bishops should voluntarily withdraw from the ACC until they can adequately address this problem. This would be something akin to removing the plank from your own eye before trying to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
