On New Year’s Eve my wife and I went to see the so-called gay cowboy movie, Brokeback Mountain. It was very well done, and very sobering. We saw the movie at the River Oaks Theater, an art house on the
outskirts of the Montrose neighborhood, which is known as Houston’s gay
area. It apparently was the only theater in town where the movie is playing.
The theater was sold out; we were one of the few straight couples present.
Some observations:
• On the whole, the main characters, Ennis and Jack, were responsible, upstanding citizens. They tried to be good family men. The movie didn’t ignore the consequences, for their wives and kids, of their intense mutual attraction.
• The movie subtly supports the claim that homosexual activity is not a choice, but is somehow hard-wired into certain people. As my wife commented on the way home, it’s hard to imagine anyone would ever choose that lifestyle.
• During the sex scene, I noticed that I had a strong, negative, visceral reaction to Ennis and Jack getting it on, and then again later when they passionately kissed. Gay advocates argue that "the ick factor" is a major source of
anti-gay prejudice. They may be onto something.
