It Was Only a Matter of Time: Akinola Calls for C of E to be Suspended

According to Virtue Online, yesterday’s Sunday Times reported that Nigerian archbishop Peter Akinola is calling for the Church of England to be suspended from the Anglican Communion because it will allow its gay clergy to register as civil partners under a new UK law.  I’m deliberately not linking to the Virtue Online piece because my preference in respect of factual reports at that site is to seek an independent confirming source, and I couldn’t find an on-line version of the cited Sunday Times article.

Father Jake’s remarks about this purported development are worth reading; don’t miss the reader comments.

UPDATE:  A commenter at Thinking Anglicans reports having confirmed the story’s genuineness; he says Akinola’s comments were cut from the printed version of the article for reasons of space.

I’m confused. The official stance of the Church of England says that clergy can register partnerships, but they’re not allowed to engage in sex. Yes, I can hear the sniggering going on out in blogland, but I know gay (and straight) folks who are still partners but they don’t have sex anymore.
If the clergy who register don’t have sex, how are folks like Bishop Akinola able to condemn them? If there’s no sex, there’s no sin, even if you take a fairly conservative view of this stuff. Bishop Akinola is assuming that all the clergy who register are liars. I’m not naive enough to suppose that all of them are telling the truth, but I would suspect that a large number of them are willing to make a sacrifice to gain the benefits associated with registration.
To me, this makes me suspect that the rift in the Anglican Communion has little to do with homosexuals or biblical interpretation. It’s all about earthly POWER – and we all know the evil that lurks when men lust after power.

The most charitable comment I can make about ++Peter Akinola is that he is a troubled, misguided soul.
He’s also forgetting that the C of E is at least the titular head of the Anglican Communion. Rather than asking that the C of E be suspended, Akinola should remove his province from the Communion if he’s so unhappy.
